Master Tom

 

Tom Chia is a Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist certified by the State of California, as well as, the National Boards.

“Master Tom”, as he is referred to by both peers and patients, was first exposed to Oriental Medicine when he was 5 years old. His uncle was a famed practitioner in the Orient and it was this exposure to seeing patients gaining wellness and healing through needles and herbs that remained deep seated in him.

He and his family immigrated to America during his early teens and Tom went on to pursue education in the sciences. He attended the University of California at Berkeley where he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Cell Biology with an emphasis in Neurobiology. Wanting to stay connected to medicine, Tom utilized his education to delve in the area of biomedicine. He focused his energy in this field, participating in the forefront of biomedicine technology happening in Silicon Valley. There, he worked on immunobiology in the development of antibody and enzymes for therapeutic drug monitoring and detection.

Although his work in biomedicine was innovative and had the potential to affect many lives, but Tom's inner passion fire for direct healing remain as lit as ever.   More importantly, Tom watched as members of his own family suffered from illness. His mother continued to endure pain on a daily basis as a result of back surgery performed 10 years prior and both his father and brother suffered from complications of Kidney disease. After much reflection, Tom made the decision to prioritize healing with more direct, interpersonal contact with patients. Reconnecting with his past, Tom chose to pursue Oriental Medicine as he sought a different approach from the treatments his own family had received in the past.

Tom attended the distinguished College of Eastern Medicine at Southern California University of Health Sciences. The inception of "Master Tom" came about during his academic term, as peers and advisers observed his discerning diagnostic skills and his aptitude in working through difficult cases, both in the classroom and in the university clinic. Tom completed his Oriental Medicine internship under the tutelage of the renowned late legendary clinician, Dr. San Hwang in Southern California. At commencement, Tom graduated with honors as the Salutatorian of his class. His proficiency in herbology was recognized as he was the recipient of the distinguished Shen Nong Herbology Award. And in testament to his dedication to learning and helping his peers, Tom was nominated for the President’s Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership.
